Medicine in English, on a Leaving Certificate

Poland has expanded English-taught medicine steadily since 2010 and now has the deepest bench of options and the most established Irish presence. The main faculties are the Medical University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków, Poznań University of Medical Sciences, the Medical University of Łódź, the Medical University of Gdańsk, the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, the Medical University of Białystok and Nicolaus Copernicus University Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz.

How you get in

Three patterns. Most faculties run their own multiple-choice entrance examination in Biology and Chemistry, taken online, often with several sittings across spring and summer. Warsaw is different: applicants must either sit the university's own competency test or submit a BMAT, MCAT, GAMSAT or UCAT score, and must hold passing grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics. Białystok admits on grades plus an online interview, with no written entrance examination. Admission at most faculties is rolling, so an early application converts into offers.

Published deadlines and fees

• Gdańsk: the six-year MD English division closed on 15 July 2026 for the Fall 2026 intake; tuition roughly €15,160 a year (PLN 64,200).
• Łódź: €15,100 in year one, €14,900 in years two to six. Application fee PLN 100. Entrance exam is a thirty-minute oral over Microsoft Teams.
• Bydgoszcz (Nicolaus Copernicus): multiple intakes, with the final 2026/2027 Medicine deadlines reported as 12 September and 25 September 2026.

The LEK, and why it matters more here than anywhere else

Poland ends medical training with a national licensing examination, the LEK. Medical Council of Ireland guidance singles Poland out: a doctor who qualifies in Poland is asked to provide the LEK, in addition to the medical degree, to establish eligibility for General Division registration. Establish before accepting an offer whether international students sit the LEK, in what language, and how the faculty supports it. This is the single most important question to put to a Polish medical school.

Charles University, founded in 1348, anchors the sector with five medical faculties: three in Prague, one in Plzeň and one in Hradec Králové. Palacký University in Olomouc, the University of Ostrava and Masaryk University in Brno complete the picture. Each faculty is an independent institution with its own admissions office, so a separate application is needed for each.

How you get in

Entrance examinations are compulsory at every Charles University medical faculty, testing Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There is no route in on grades alone for an international applicant. At the First Faculty the written test is followed by a multiple mini-interview round, and the final decision rests on the interview. Hradec Králové deducts points for wrong answers, so a negative score is possible.

Tuition across the other faculties

Hradec Králové CZK 400,000 (about €15,795), Plzeň CZK 390,000 (about €15,600), Masaryk Brno CZK 380,000 (about €15,100), Palacký Olomouc about €12,500, Ostrava about €12,000. Sources conflict on whether Ostrava currently runs a full English-taught programme, so confirm directly with that faculty before shortlisting it.

The tuition-free alternative

Charles University charges nothing for study conducted in Czech. A fee arises only if a student exceeds the standard six years by more than one, so the normal path costs nothing beyond living expenses, for any nationality. The trade is a preparatory year of intensive Czech and six years of medicine in a Slavic language.

Four universities carry Hungarian medical education in English: Semmelweis in Budapest, Debrecen, Pécs and Szeged. All four appear in the top 500 of the QS or Shanghai rankings and Hungary has trained international doctors in English for decades.

How you get in

Semmelweis illustrates the pattern. The written examination is delivered online through Moodle and taken from home, comprising four sections of twenty questions each: Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry, General English and Biomedical English. Successful candidates proceed to a personal interview covering professional attitude, motivation and communication in English, which includes an oral examination on the same sciences. Debrecen adds Physics. Pécs runs entrance exams weekly from early March.

Published application windows for the 2026 intake

• Semmelweis: applications opened 12 January 2026, deadline 31 May 2026 for General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Admission procedure fee USD 400, deposit USD 2,000 credited against first-semester tuition, enrolment fee USD 230.
• Szeged: applications open from 1 December 2025 through the DreamApply portal; General Medicine deadline 15 June 2026, transfer applicants 15 May 2026.
• Pécs: application period 1 November 2025 to 30 June 2026, one autumn intake, next start 1 September 2026.

Why this suits a Leaving Certificate holder

The Hungarian format is the closest of any on this page to Leaving Certificate Higher Level content. It tests subject knowledge directly rather than aptitude, and the biomedical English section is an advantage rather than an obstacle for a native speaker.

Cost caution

Hungary spans the widest fee range of the four core countries. Semmelweis publishes tuition in US dollars at 9,950 per semester. Debrecen, Pécs and Szeged sit lower. Compare six-year totals and check the billing currency, because dollar exposure over six years is real.

Seven institutions teach medicine in English: Medical University Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Pleven, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", Trakia University in Stara Zagora and Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University in Burgas. Pleven launched the first English-language medical programme in Bulgaria in 1997.

The February intake

Pleven runs a February start for Medicine in addition to September, and has published online entry examination dates for the February 2027 intake. Biology and Chemistry are sat on the same date. This is the shortest route back in after a missed September window.

Germany has 43 medical faculties, most public and several among the best in the world. Humanmedizin runs six years and three months and concludes in the Staatsexamen and the Approbation. Public tuition is free beyond a semester contribution of roughly €150 to €350, the exception being Baden-Württemberg, which charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester.

Why it does not work as an English-taught route

Medicine at German public universities is taught, examined and practised in German, covering lectures, seminars, clinical training and all three parts of the state examination. C1 German is typically required to apply, with some programmes accepting B2. There is no structural provision for a public university to offer a full undergraduate medical degree in English, and there are no English-taught Staatsexamen programmes at private German medical schools either.

What exists in English, and what it actually is

• UMCH, Hamburg. The Medical Campus Hamburg of the George Emil Palade University of Târgu Mureș, Romania. Fully English-taught six-year MD, roughly 150 to 165 international places a year, admission by a brief academic evaluation and a motivation-based interview that can be taken online. The qualification is Romanian, so it is EU-recognised, but it is not a German degree and does not by itself lead to the German Approbation without German to C1. Students complete an internal university final examination rather than the German state examination. A hybrid pathway runs the first two years in Hamburg and the remaining four in Romania at substantially lower cost. Applications after 31 July require prior contact with the admissions team.
• European University Cyprus, Frankfurt campus. A branch of the Cypriot university, WFME-recognised and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, delivering a Cypriot MD in Frankfurt.

Both are priced between roughly €25,000 and €34,800 a year for a degree in the same EU recognition category you can obtain in Bulgaria for €9,000. Unless there is a specific reason to be in Germany, the arithmetic does not favour them over Romania or Cyprus directly.

The route that does work

German to C1, a Studienkolleg year if the certificate is not treated as equivalent to the Abitur, application through Hochschulstart, and often the TMS aptitude test. Twelve to eighteen months of language preparation before the six years and three months of the degree. A H3 in Higher Level German is a real starting point, though C1 is a considerable distance further on. If the ambition is to practise in the German-speaking world, this is the honest path and it is essentially free.

Four public medical universities, Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck and Johannes Kepler University Linz, offering roughly 1,900 places a year. The six-year Diplomstudium Humanmedizin leads to Dr. med. univ. Tuition at MedUni Vienna is €363.36 per semester plus a €26.20 students' union contribution for those liable, with permanent and temporary exemptions, and €726.72 per semester for non-EU students.

Why the door is narrow

• The degree is taught entirely in German and requires a C1 certificate.
• Entry is only through the MedAT, held once a year in a single July sitting and administered in German, covering basic medical sciences, cognitive ability, text comprehension and social-emotional competence. Registration opens in March, fee around €110.
• Under the Universities Act, 75 per cent of medicine places are reserved for Austrian qualification holders, roughly 20 per cent for other EU applicants and at most 5 per cent for everyone else.
• Graz and JKU Linz additionally require evidence of Latin, or a supplementary examination.

The English-taught option

Sigmund Freud Private University in Vienna runs human medicine in English through a bachelor's plus master's structure leading to Dr. med. univ. It is a private, for-profit institution accredited by the Austrian quality assurance agency. Tuition is quoted at over €12,500 per semester, commonly described as €25,000 to €30,000 a year. Paracelsus in Salzburg, Karl Landsteiner in Krems and Danube Private University run between roughly €13,000 and €40,000 a year with some teaching partly in English.

The degree is Austrian and therefore EU-recognised, a genuine advantage over Georgia or Türkiye. But the six-year total is roughly double Prague and triple Bulgaria for a qualification in the same recognition category.

Georgia has built a substantial English-medium medical sector in Tbilisi over twenty years. The institutions that recur for Irish and British applicants are Tbilisi State Medical University, Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy, Alte University, Caucasus International University, New Vision University and European University Tbilisi.

How you get in

Most Georgian universities run no entrance examination. Admission is on the school-leaving certificate, evidence of English at B1 or B2, and an interview, often by video. Some issue an offer within a week of a complete application. TSMU's own admissions page additionally requires that all documents be translated into Georgian and notarised in two original copies, and that the school certificate cover the last two years of general education abroad.

What it costs

Tuition runs from roughly €4,000 to €7,000, or 4,500 to 8,000 US dollars, per year. Published examples include Caucasus International University at €5,530 and New Vision University at €6,450 for the six-year MD; TSMU is variously quoted at 8,000 and 13,500 dollars, so confirm directly. Living costs in Tbilisi run around 300 to 500 dollars a month, the lowest figure anywhere on this page.

The recognition problem, stated plainly

Georgia is outside the EU and the EEA, so Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply. Irish registration falls into Category 4, requiring credential verification through EPIC and then the Pre-Registration Examination System. Agencies placing Irish students in Georgia say this openly: graduates can apply for registration after completing PRES exams. That is accurate, and it is a materially different proposition from the EU route.

A second consequence is less advertised. Eligibility for the Irish intern matching scheme is restricted to graduates of medical schools in Ireland, the United Kingdom and a specified list of EEA countries. Georgia is not on it. Internship would be completed in Georgia or elsewhere and then assessed retrospectively by the Medical Council. Confirm the current position with both the Medical Council and the HSE Medical Intern Unit before committing.

A 2026 development to verify

There are reports that from the 2026/27 academic year Georgian state universities, including TSMU, have stopped admitting new international students, leaving private institutions as the available options. Recent, single-sourced, and needing confirmation directly with any university under consideration.

Türkiye has around ninety medical faculties, more than ten teaching in English. The national accreditation body, TEPDAD, is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education, which matters for ECFMG certification and the United States route. The sector splits cleanly in two.

Public universities: cheap and very hard

Hacettepe in Ankara is widely regarded as the strongest faculty in the country, alongside Ankara University and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. English-medium tracks exist and tuition is dramatically lower than private rates, reported between roughly 2,000 and 11,000 dollars a year. Admission requires a high score on the Turkish YÖS examination for international students, or a very high SAT, commonly cited at 1400 or above with a strong mathematics section. Competition for international places is severe.

Private foundation universities: accessible and expensive

Koç, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar, Yeditepe, Istanbul Medipol, İstinye, Bahçeşehir, Biruni and Altınbaş all run English-taught medicine. Most do not require YÖS or SAT. Fees for 2026 run from roughly 12,500 to 44,000 dollars a year: Koç commonly 15,000 to 25,000; Medipol and İstinye typically 16,000 to 25,080; Yeditepe's list price of 45,000 is often discounted to around 33,750. Partial scholarships of 25 to 50 per cent are realistic and not always advertised, so ask directly.

The Turkish language requirement, in writing

Koç is explicit and worth quoting as the pattern: instruction is in English, but students whose Turkish is insufficient must reach B1 by the end of the first year and C1 by the end of the third, and the C1 certificate is a prerequisite for entering Clinical Year 1. Bedside teaching from year four is conducted in Turkish. Koç also states that no scholarships, full or partial, are available to admitted international students, and admits only 20 to 30 international students a year.

Recognition, as with Georgia

Türkiye sits outside the EU and the EEA. No automatic recognition, Irish registration through Category 4 and the PRES, and the country does not appear among those whose graduates may enter the Irish intern matching scheme. The counterweight is that Koç is on the approved lists of ECFMG, the California Medical Board and the GMC, so if the long-term destination is North America or the UK rather than Ireland, the calculus changes.
